Hypnosis is a naturally occurring altered state of awareness and consciousness that you experience day in and day out. For example, when you are reading a book and are absorbed in it to the exclusion of everything that is going on around you.
Hypnotherapy is the utilisation of this relaxed state for the purpose of administering therapy. The therapy (for whatever purpose e.g. to stop smoking or eliminate a phobia) is the help that you need to effect a positive change in your life.
When in the hypnotic state direct communication with the unconscious mind can take place. The mind is divided into the conscious and the unconscious. Broadly, the conscious mind is everything that we are aware of, our perception of our environment and our relationship with it.
The unconscious mind is everything that we know but are not aware of at that moment in time. The unconscious mind stores patterns of behaviours and responses that are both positive and negative. During Hypnotherapy communication with the unconscious mind through the use of suggestion can enable real and lasting change to take place.
